Deleted videos but iPhone storage still full? Fix it

Short answer

Deleted videos go to Recently Deleted and stay there for up to 30 days, so the space comes back only after you empty that album. If iCloud Photos is on, a deletion also removes the video from your other devices.

Why the space doesn’t come back straight away

When you delete a video on your iPhone, it doesn’t leave the device at once. Apple says deleted photos and videos go to your Recently Deleted album and stay there for 30 days, and after 30 days they are permanently deleted (Apple Support, Delete photos on your iPhone or iPad). The file is still on the phone during that time, which is why emptying the album is the step that frees the space.

If iCloud Photos is on, the storage picture has one more part. Full-resolution videos are kept in iCloud, and smaller copies are stored on the iPhone when it needs the space (Apple Support, Manage your photo and video storage). That is why the number on the Storage screen can look different from the size of the files you think you removed.

Empty Recently Deleted to get the space back

Emptying Recently Deleted is the step that actually frees the space. It can’t be undone, so check the list first.

  1. Open the Photos app and tap Collections.
  2. Under Utilities, tap Recently Deleted. Unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Apple locks this album by default.
  3. Tap Select, then choose the videos you want to remove.
  4. Tap More, then tap Delete. To remove everything in the album, tap More, then Delete All.
  5. Confirm. Apple says that once you delete a photo or video from Recently Deleted, you can’t get it back.

To keep a video instead, select it in Recently Deleted, tap More, then Recover. It goes back to your library (Apple Support, Delete photos on your iPhone or iPad).

Apple’s help pages also say that a photo can sometimes be in a Recovered collection rather than Recently Deleted. If a video you expected is missing, check there before you assume it has been removed.

Check that the deletion reached iCloud

Deleting a video on one device deletes it on the others that use the same Apple Account, if iCloud Photos is on. Apple says the photo or video is removed on your other devices as well (Apple Support, Delete photos on your iPhone or iPad). The same applies to a deletion made on your Mac or iPad.

Your iPhone’s Storage number reflects what is on the phone. So if you have iCloud Photos on and Optimize iPhone Storage turned on, a video may already be a small copy on the phone before you delete it. Apple says Optimize iPhone Storage is on by default when you use iCloud Photos, and that full-resolution files stay in iCloud (Apple Support, Manage your photo and video storage).

The setting is in a different place depending on your iOS version:

  • iOS 26 and earlier: Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos, then iPhone Storage, and choose Optimize Storage.
  • iOS 27: Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos. Turn on Sync this iPhone, tap iPhone Storage, and make sure Optimize iPhone Storage is on.

Why the Storage screen may not match yet

Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. The list shows each app and the space it uses, and Show All lists the recommendations for your device (Apple Support, Manage storage on iPhone).

The Apple pages we checked don’t say how often this screen refreshes, or how long a deletion takes to show up in it. So if the number hasn’t changed after you emptied Recently Deleted, work through these checks before you assume the space is gone:

  1. Make sure the videos are no longer in Recently Deleted or the Recovered collection.
  2. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi for a few minutes, so iCloud Photos can sync the deletion.
  3. Leave the Storage screen and open it again.

If the number still hasn’t changed, check your library for large videos you expected to be gone, and look at the recommendations in iPhone Storage.

Apple also offers Recommended for You in iCloud settings. It can flag photos, large files or old backups you might delete, and Apple’s page says merging duplicate photos and videos can free up space too (Apple Support, Manage your photo and video storage).

If you replace videos with compressed copies

The same rule applies when an app replaces your videos with smaller copies. Emptie, which isn’t out yet, moves each original to Recently Deleted only after you’ve compared it with its compressed copy and confirmed, so the space comes back when you empty that album. Emptie never empties Recently Deleted for you, because that step can’t be undone.

What to do next

If your phone is full because of large videos, the quickest gain is usually emptying Recently Deleted after you have made sure you don’t need the originals. To keep new videos smaller, use the built-in settings in how to compress video on iPhone. For a sense of how much a library of large videos can take up, read how much storage iPhone video takes. If you are worried about quality, does compressing video lose quality covers what changes and what doesn’t. To work out which videos to delete, move to iCloud or compress in the first place, start with iPhone storage full of videos.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone storage still full after deleting videos?

Deleted photos and videos go to Recently Deleted and stay there for 30 days. The space they use comes back only after you delete them from that album, or after they’re permanently removed.

How do I empty Recently Deleted on iPhone?

Open Photos, go to Collections, and tap Recently Deleted under Utilities. Unlock the album with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, select the videos, tap More, then tap Delete or Delete All. Deleted items can’t be recovered.

Can I recover videos from Recently Deleted?

Yes, for 30 days after you delete them. Select the videos, tap More, then tap Recover. They go back to your library.

Does deleting a video on iPhone delete it from iCloud?

If iCloud Photos is on, yes. Apple says a photo or video deleted on one device is deleted from the other devices signed in with the same Apple Account.

Will Emptie delete my videos without asking?

No. Emptie deletes an original only after its compressed copy is saved and checked, and after you confirm in Review. The original then goes to Recently Deleted for 30 days, so you can restore it.
