How do I get an original video back?

When Emptie replaces a video, the original goes to Recently Deleted in Photos. It stays there for 30 days.

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Go to Collections › Recently Deleted. Unlock it with Face ID or your passcode.
  3. Tap Select, choose the video, then tap Recover.

The original comes back to your library. The smaller copy stays in your library too, so delete the copy if you don’t want both.

After 30 days, or once you empty Recently Deleted, the original is gone for good.

Your Total Freed figure in Emptie doesn’t go down when you recover an original: Emptie can’t see Recently Deleted.

Why hasn’t my free space gone up?

The originals are still on your iPhone. Photos keeps deleted videos in Recently Deleted for 30 days, and they take up the same space there until they’re removed.

To get the space back now:

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Go to Collections › Recently Deleted. Unlock it with Face ID or your passcode.
  3. Tap Select, then Delete All.

This can’t be undone, so recover any original you want to keep first. Settings › General › iPhone Storage can take a few minutes to show the new free space.

If you use iCloud Photos, emptying Recently Deleted on your iPhone frees the space in iCloud too.

What does “Already efficient” mean?

Compressing that video would save under 20% of its size, so Emptie leaves it alone. You can’t select it.

Videos that are already small for their length, such as ones saved from messaging apps or recorded at low quality, often show this. Replacing them would cost a little quality for very little space.

If a video’s copy turns out to save under 20% once it’s compressed, Emptie deletes the copy and keeps your original as it was.
